Dough Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder (natural)
- 1 teaspoon natural sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup plant-based yogurt (such as coconut, almond, or soy)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (natural)
- 1 tablespoon vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Optional Ingredients
- Fresh herbs such as cilantro or parsley
- Minced fresh garlic
- Ground cumin, coriander, or smoked paprika (natural)
- Natural maple syrup (natural)
- Natural gelling agent (for gluten-free versions)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, natural sugar, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the plant-based yogurt, apple cider vinegar, vegetarian Worcestershire sauce, warm water, and olive oil. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the Dough: Lightly flour a work surface and knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a covered bowl and let it rest for about 1 hour to allow a slight rise.
- Divide and Shape: After resting, divide the dough into equal portions depending on desired naan size. Roll each piece into an oval or round shape about 1/4 inch thick. Optionally, sprinkle fresh herbs or spices on top and gently press into the dough surface.
- Cook the Naan: Heat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat and brush lightly with olive oil. Place a rolled dough piece on the pan and cook until bubbles appear and the bottom is golden brown, about 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook the other side for 1 to 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining dough.
- Serve Warm: Serve the naan warm, brushed with olive oil or plant-based butter and garnished with additional herbs if desired. Enjoy as a side or with your favorite dishes.
Notes
- Use warm water to activate the baking powder and improve rise.
- Do not over-roll the dough to maintain softness and fluffiness.
- Resting the dough enhances elasticity and chewiness.
- Cook on medium heat to avoid burning and achieve a golden crust.
- Add flavors like plant-based butter and herbs after cooking for freshness.
