Description

Discover a simple, flavorful Cowboy Mushrooms recipe featuring smoked turkey bacon and vegetarian Worcestershire sauce for a delicious plant-based twist. Combining hearty mushrooms with smoky, savory notes, this dish is easy to prepare and packed with bold flavors, perfect as a side or main for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Mushrooms and Protein

  • 2 cups mixed cremini and button mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
  • 4 slices smoked turkey bacon, cut into bite-sized pieces

Vegetables and Aromatics

  • 2 garlic cloves, freshly minced
  • 1 medium onion, diced

Liquids and Fats

  • 2 tbsp vegetarian Worcestershire sauce (natural)
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp plant-based butter (natural)

Herbs and Seasoning

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or thyme, chopped
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Ingredients: Clean and slice mushrooms evenly, dice the onion, mince the garlic, and cut smoked turkey bacon into bite-sized pieces. Set aside to cook without interruption.
  2. Cook the Smoked Turkey Bacon: Warm a large skillet over medium heat, add the smoked turkey bacon, and cook until crisp. Remove bacon and leave the rendered fat in the pan.
  3. Sauté Onions and Garlic: In the same pan, add olive oil if needed, then add diced onion. Cook until translucent and soft, about 4 to 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  4. Cook the Mushrooms: Increase heat slightly and add mushrooms. Stir occasionally as they release moisture and begin to brown, developing rich umami flavors.
  5. Add Flavors: Return smoked turkey bacon to the pan. Pour in vegetarian Worcestershire sauce and apple cider vinegar. Stir well to combine and let liquids reduce slightly, coating the mushrooms.
  6. Finish with Plant-Based Butter and Herbs: Turn off the heat and stir in plant-based butter and fresh herbs. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Use fresh mushrooms for best texture and flavor.
  • Cook mushrooms in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan.
  • Sauté onions and garlic gently to develop sweetness without burning.
  • Warm smoked turkey bacon until just crisp for optimal smoky flavor.
  • Adding fresh herbs at the end preserves vibrant flavor and color.
